Knowing the difference


First and foremost you should understand which companies provide what service. They usually fall into one of three categories, consolidation, counseling or debt relief. Debt relief is pretty much the same as a credit counseling firm but their rates and qualifications for their plans differ tremendously. Let's break it down:

Credit Counseling will usually offer a management plan that promises to contact and negotiate your debt with your creditors or debt resolution companies. You make a small contribution which is disbursed evenly to all of your creditors including a small fee to the counseling agency.

Debt relief agencies promise to negotiate your balance into a much, much lower balance for easier payoff. Usually the charges and qualifications for this type of plan are extremely difficult to meet. Usually a 18% charge of the amount of debt you bring into them is paid prior to them engaging in your debt relief program.
